<p>The purpose of this study is a conceptual analysis of the evolution of group psychotherapy in penitentiary institutions, with special attention to the transition from classical support groups to models of therapeutic communities. The objectives of the work include identifying fundamental contradictions between therapeutic norms and the values of the prison subculture, aswell asdetermining the organizational and clinical conditions necessary for the effective transformation of the group process. The methodological basis is the integration of data from penitentiary psychology, the theory of total institutions by Erwin Hoffman and clinical psychiatry. The results of the study demonstrate that the keychallenge is the deep conflict between the principles of openness, vulnerability and trust, on the onehand, and the norms of «prison concepts», the cult of power and the prohibition of frankness, on the other. This conflict generates the phenomena of pseudo-disclosure, instrumental motivation, and manipulation of the therapeutic space. The conditions necessary for DOI: 10.24412/2782-3830-2026-4-303-309 the transformation of the group are defined: the long-term nature of the intervention, special training of the leaders, administrative support and integration of psychopathological literacy. It is concluded that it is necessary to develop a hybrid model of the therapeutic community adapted to the Russian penitentiary context, taking into account the newlegal norms that entered into force in 2026.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>пенитенциарная психотерапия</kwd><kwd>групповая динамика</kwd><kwd>терапевтическое сообщество</kwd><kwd>тюремная субкультура</kwd><kwd>социальная реадаптация</kwd><kwd>тотальный институт</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>penitentiary psychotherapy</kwd><kwd>group dynamics</kwd><kwd>therapeutic community</kwd><kwd>prison subculture</kwd><kwd>social readaptation</kwd><kwd>total institution</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><ref id="ref1"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">Искандаров, Р.
